The Blood Books, Volume One - Tanya Huff. This is an omnibus edition of Blood Trail and Blood Price. Both feature Vicki "Victory" Nelson, a former ace Toronto cop forced to retire because of a degenerative eye disease. She becomes a private investigator instead, & in one of her early cases she meets a vampire. Yay! In the second book, she meets werewolves. Double yay! It is true I have developed a weakness for stories dealing w/such creatures, but I do think I have some taste remaining (I hated Stephenie Meyer's revolting Twilight, for one). These are fun, light reads. I also like that there are random queer people: meaning people who are casually shown to be queer, but it's not OMG Big Revelation or whatever.
Think Like a Cat: How to Raise a Well-Adjusted Cat, Not a Sour Puss - Pam Johnson-Bennett. This ended up being pretty repetitive after having read the author's other book, Cat vs. Cat. In addition, her cloying faith in the good intentions & sound science of the pet food industry is laughable nowadays. Plus, she seems to buy into lots of what I understand to be feline health myths: like that dry food helps clean teeth.
The Dedalus Book of Finnish Fantasy - Edited by Johanna Sinisalo. I was so excited about this anthology, & I was mostly not disappointed. The stories are infused w/the wry Finnish humor I love, & they're just interesting. In my favorite stories, a man's dog starts to talk to him, & eventually grows wings; a meteorologist disappears because he's gone to live inside his wife's thigh; & a bear spirit plays Pied Piper to a village's children but also protects them from a violent criminal. Oh, & a mysterious man can absorb your illness into his body, for a price. I was delighted to read that the word for "explorer" in Finnish is "tutkimusmatkailija"--which works out to be something like "research-traveler." Hee!
