Almost done w/2014 reads... !!!
Paranormal Bromance - Carrie Vaughn. This novella was kind of adorable! It's a fast read, set in the Kittyverse but w/those main characters in the background (I liked Rick's cameo especially). The protagonists are a buncha nerdy gamer types who became vampires 15 years ago & are still doing the stereotypical bachelor pad in a basement-type existence: no glamorous masters of the night here. I really liked seeing these kinds of vampires -- there are some affectionate shoutouts to (a certain kind of) nerd culture that clearly come from Carrie Vaughn's own nostalgia, but in a cute, funny way.
Spirits Abroad - Zen Cho. This is a lovely collection of short fantasy stories, set in Malaysia or featuring Malaysian immigrants (for example, to the UK). Because I am horribly slack at writing things up here, I should note that I read the bulk of this while flying back to the US over the holidays last year & made my sister-in-law (who has been the enthusiastic recipient of many of my books & recommendations for years!) take it. Which means that my recollection of specifics is even worse than usual. But! The stories are funny & vivid & poignant all at the same time, & need I say that it is always refreshing to read stuff that isn't set in generic Whitelandia???
Succubus Shadows - Richelle Mead. More delicious fluff from this series about Georgina Kincaid, the titular succubus who's also kind of a lit nerd & loves her job at a Seattle bookstore. This one has surprisingly heart-rending bits here & there.
Discord's Apple - Carrie Vaughn. This book is kind of like a little kid inhaling tons of mythology (at least the kinds one is usually exposed to in white USian schools, eg. Greek myths) & then growing up & writing the kind of thing maybe you wondered as a kid, where what if mystical creature x from this mythological tradition fought w/Greek god y, who would win??? So this should be really shiny & fun & cool, but I have to say it didn't grab me that much, particularly not the ending, alas.
