the thing about chen's author photo feels SO important. when a skinny woman likes sweets, it's a charming quirk. with a fat woman, it's embarrassing, a sign of her lack of self control and slovenliness, etc. if the book had been published by a fat woman, that in itself would have given it a whole different meaning (a la the difference in the two nyt articles). crazy.
