They do look like an awful lot of faff for not much reward. Then again, now I want to try them because I never had and I hate the idea of missing out on potential vegetable goodness.

Oh as a kid I hated them. I think with reason though, I'd only ever had them at my nana's house and her forte was not the cooking of vegetables. She overcooked every vegetable under the sun, making her somewhat of a disgrace to traditional Irish cabbage based cooking. It was only when I was about 14 that someone cooked them well for me and I went OM NOM NOM about them. Now I love them. Though, yes, there is an awful lot of cultural hate around them. I know someone whose entire family despises them but they still feel the need to cook them for Christmas dinner. I find that bizarre.
