I'd certainly never encountered one when I was living there, but then, the extent of my cooking was usually those pasta & dust packets.
They sell jerusalem artichokes a lot @ the farmer's markets here, so people who are in CSAs often either get them or hear about them. We bought some once & were rather nonplussed w/them. I mean, they were tasty enough, but whatever we did w/them (I can't remember) didn't seem to make it worth peeling them all. Though my friend sarrabellum loves them & discovered a shit ton in her backyard (iirc, she moved into a house whose previous occupants had an amazing garden, but moved before harvest time), so perhaps we just didn't pick an amazing recipe.
I love brussels sprouts now too! Of course I wouldn't even touch them as a kid--I think I "knew" I wasn't supposed to like them before I'd ever been offered them (THAT'S how ubiquitous the hate is, Babson!!).
